I walked the garden this morning. The canna are blooming. I love the leaves, but the flowers are not such a great thing to look at. Daylilies are still blooming. The coneflowers are blooming. These have a little white in them which is really cool. Like a candy striper. You can really see new growth on the azaleas, too.
One of the hydrangea (can't remember the name) is forming a new mophead flower. It is cool because it is really too late in the season for that to supposed to be happening for a non-rebloomer. There are two paniculatas in the back bed that have blooms. They are super duper small, but at least I can see them coming. I will be able to identify them once they bloom which is great.
In the herb bed, the monarda finally bloomed. In its third year. The flowers are so beautiful - purple. In the front bed, the veronica and the penstemon are blooming. Or at least trying to. That place may be too shady. The balloon flowers look amazing. The H. s. Moonlight is growing rampantly. On the other side, the 'Hortensis' is about to bust open. That is my favorite of all of them.
Last weekend we edged the bed on the other side of the driveway. It has needed that for a long time. We are almost done putting new mulch on it. Previously I put pinestraw. This time I put pinebark mulch down. Very thickly. I hope it looks good for longer. I also moved 3 Oakleaf Hydrangeas into that bed.
Even more good things happening in the veggie garden. The tomato plants are pretty big now and they all have fruit. Just waiting for it to ripen. The leaf edges are still yellow and brown on some of them. Not sure what this is - hope it is not a disease cuz I would hate to see it spread. Squash of all kinds are growing. Got some off the vine for Bill and Susan the other day. One of them I grew in a cage like the tomatoes. That has really worked out well. I'm going to do that with all of them next year. There are lots of peppers on the vine. I will keep them there until the tomatoes are ready. I need to finish harvesting the yukon gold potatoes. We have really enjoyed having fresh potatoes. I want to grow more of them next year. Of course, you know about the corn and bean problem. Dan shot one of the rabbits so maybe that will help, but I have to re-plant those. Cantaloupes are forming and there are hundreds of flowers on the pumpkin and watermelon. The onions and garlic and carrots are still growing - too early for them.
I got a few blueberries off the bush this morning - they were yummy. The raspberries are almost more invasive than kudzu - and they are a little gross right now because the japanese beetles have taken them over. OH! I found a fig tree in the yard today. There is fruit on it but it is not ripe yet. That is so awesome.
I will take some pictures of these things this weekend.
